Dear Friends of the Greater York Recreational Complex,
The Maine Sports Commission is pleased to support your efforts to bring a multi-use recreational center to the Greater York area and State of Maine. As Executive Director of the Maine Sports Commission, I believe your proposed goals for this project are well-aligned with our overall mission to promote Maine as a four-season destination for sports events and sports-related meetings and to increase the economic impact of the state by attracting new events or by expanding existing sports-related events.
Through our efforts, the Maine Sports Commission is helping the state realize the positive economic impact and social benefits of sports. Our primary goal in supporting your proposal is to help strengthen efforts to attract national and regional sporting events, with hopes of increasing Maine's share of the $7 billion sports-travel industry.
We are especially excited for the prospect of having a new swimming venue in the state. Your facility will be one of the only true swimming competition venues in the state and will allow for the possibility of hosting numerous large-scale events. The ability to attract larger regional or national swimming competitions and events will be a great asset to my organization and will lead to a larger economic impact for the area and state as a whole. We expect a new swimming competition complex to generate approximately $1 million in total economic impact within one year based on average hotel rates in the area and out-of-state participation at other swimming competitions in the Northeast. This includes a positive impact to the local hospitality industry through increased lodging and dining, but also to the business community as a whole.
In addition to the vast business capacity of this new venue, this facility has the ability to support and promote the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle and a vibrant sporting community. Other similar communities with such incredible indoor swimming pools and adjacent sports areas can constantly be utilized to build on the sense of community that this generates. We appreciate your efforts to ensure that the Greater York area has a common focal point where all members of the community can congregate to develop a similar sense of fellowship and well-being necessary to all thriving communities.
We support your efforts in building a healthy community and growing Maine’s economy through this proposed new facility. Please call on us if we can be of assistance as this exciting venture moves forward.
